Late Night Votes

We take late night votes when the Republicans want to hide their tough votes. On my 30th, 31st birthdays we were in session. I rolled out of the office at around 3AM for both of those days. Today I got to leave at 130AM. While not as late as other nites this was the friday before recess. Its like having to stay at school before summer recess until 9PM so that teachers can meet and discuss curriculumn development. Today we voted on the Minimum Wage and a tax cut for the rich.

Anyway, after votes walking down through the basement when no one around is lonely until you see other staffers scamper from their offices to the garage. Its funny there is a knowing nod and look of relief. Finally they are gone.

Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations

He ate a seal...raw.

It was impossible to turn away from Anthony Bourdain and this Inuit family chow down on seal. They just dug in. It was a bloody mess. Supposedly it is a delicacey... my guess that it melts in your mouth like pate. Seriously the Inuit dad was eating the ribs like he was at Chili's.

He said he was sure that he was going to get mail. No shit! Damn it was a seal.

Anyway, turn on the travel channel and watch it.

The Job on the eve of WWIII

I cant find her.

A friend of the Congressman's has not gotten out of Beruit yet and the Israelis are set to invade southern Lebanon. This is nerve racking. It puts my job into perspective. I get terribly upset about net neutrality and then i have to help someone out of a emerging war zone and realize that some of what i get worked up about just is silly. The partisanship, the quibble, our stupid campaigns killing each other over procedural votes, tis a silly place. I hope we get her out soon. i am a little scared that it might not happen. Then what?

Airport

I think it is the anticipation of leaving or the chance to see the world but i love the airport. The people, the movement and the search are all memerizing. Where are people going ? Is it work or is it fun? Is it to visit family or to get away from it all. I like the airport lounges, in Japan and CHina the lounges have all sorts of fun food and drinks. In Narita the airport has little dumplings and noodles. But it all means nothing compared to the possability of seeing the world.

New Direction for America

House Democrats believe that America needs a New Direction that provides opportunity, security and prosperity for all Americans.

While some may try to score political points with divisive issues, House Democrats want to address the real challenges facing the American people – high health care costs, college affordability, rising gas and energy prices, retirement security, and stagnant wages. House Democrats also make homeland security and support for our veterans and military personnel a real priority, not just a talking point. And we will bring honest leadership and open government back the US Congress.

Democrats in Congress offer a New Direction, putting the common good of all Americans first for a change, and will:

MAKE HEALTH CARE MORE AFFORDABLE
Fix the prescription drug program by putting people ahead of drug companies and HMOs, eliminating wasteful subsidies, negotiating lower drug prices and ensuring the program works for all seniors; invest in stem cell and other medical research.

LOWER GAS PRICES AND ACHIEVE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
Crack down on price gouging; eliminate billions in subsidies for oil and gas companies and use the savings to provide consumer relief and develop American alternatives, including biofuels; promote energy efficient technology.

HELP WORKING FAMILIES
Raise the minimum wage; repeal tax giveaways that encourage companies to move jobs overseas.

CUT COLLEGE COSTS
Make college tuition deductible from taxes; expand Pell grants and cut student loan costs.

ENSURE DIGNIFIED RETIREMENT
Prevent the privatization of Social Security; expand savings incentives; ensure pension fairness.

REQUIRE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
Restore the budget discipline of the 1990s that helped eliminate deficits and spur record economic growth.

THE WRONG DIRECTION
The Bush Administration and the Republican Majority in Congress have taken the country in the wrong direction for Americans and their families.

RISING HEALTH CARE COSTS
Under this Administration, the cost of family health insurance has risen more than 70%, or an average of $4,500 per family, and 6 million more Americans are uninsured. Meanwhile, the Majority has enacted a confusing and costly prescription drug benefit that prohibits Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices, has cut funding for medical research, and has prohibited federal funding of a real stem cell research program.

RISING ENERGY PRICES
Gas prices have nearly doubled and exceed $3.00 per gallon in many places, and dependence on foreign oil increased to 60%. Meanwhile, the Republican Majority has blocked efforts to ban price gouging, rewarded oil and gas companies with billions in new subsidies at a time of record profits, and opposed investments in alternative fuels and energy efficient technology.

RISING ECONOMIC INSECURITY
Real family income has fallen every year of the Bush Administration, while CEO compensation has soared. Meanwhile, the Majority has blocked any increase in the minimum wage for 7.5 million workers, while providing billions in corporate tax subsidies that encourage sending jobs overseas.

RISING DEFICITS AND DEBT
The Majority has turned a projected $5.6 trillion budget surplus into a $3.2 trillion budget deficit and put us on course to double our national debt to nearly $12 trillion by 2011.

RISING COLLEGE COSTS
Tuition has increased by $2,000 (57%) at public universities and by $5,000 (32%) at private universities since the 2000-2001 school year. Meanwhile, the Majority has cut $12 billion from college student aid, increasing the costs of loans; has frozen Pell Grants for higher education; and has failed to extend the college tuition tax deduction.

RISING RETIREMENT INSECURITY
The Majority has fought to privatize Social Security, which would have cut benefits for the middle class and added trillions to our debt, and failed to protect workers’ pensions while CEOs receive hundred-million dollar retirement packages.

DC Restaurant Review: Georgia Brown's

Everyone told me this was one of the best brunches in DC. We are talking breakfast food and fried chicken good. The kind of meal that will stick to your bones and provide you with nurishment for days. The meal was good, it was overwhelming, it was solid.

When we arrived I think J Crew must have had a trunk sale becuase every women had on a pretty summer dress. So you had all the fascinating smells of food, especially the bacon coupled with beautiful people. It was sensory overload.

The meal started with cocktails, a bloody was made in order. Bloody's in DC are pretty tame this drink came with a huge shrimp attached to it and the rim of the cup was dusted in old bay. Personally I like my bloody's with fresh horseradish and so much worcester sauce that makes your mouth sting. The drink here for $10 bucks was watery with some spice. But really who needs a cocktail when the brunch buffet was all you need.

To start, the service was great. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgable. The various drinks were never empty, he cleared dishes rapidly and he never once pushed us. I would go back strictly because of the service.

The bruch buffet: carved turkey, carved roast beef, and ham; eggs benedict, french toast. cripsy bacon, sausage, grits, fruit galore, potato salad; ceaser salad, and a mixed green and corn salad; biscuits; omelet station; chocolate fountain with marshmallows, pineapples, bicotiie, gram crakers, strawberries, rice crispy treats; rasaberry triffle, cinnamon bunt cake, lemon bars, cake, mixed berry crumble. Buffet food is always hit or miss, but when is food for the masses any good? I love grits, creamy with a little butter and cripsy bacon, damn i could have had that all day. The french toast was too dry and you had to literally dunk it in the maple syrup to get it moist. the biscuits were a little dry but yummy, the sausage was excellent, the eggs benedict were good, the salads were super yummy. I cant really rate the desserts because by the time i had it i was more or less forcing it down. I'm lying the bunt cake ruled.

For my main course I had the Fried Chicken: I dont rate this because it is actually a gift from God. Fried chicken is the best thing ever. You will bless yourself when you eat it.

For you loyal readers the coffee was exceptional!

I would go back again and again mainly for the grits and bacon.

They also had live jazz playing for a long time it was Ella Fitzgerald doing the Cole Porter collection. It really added to great ambiance and the great home cooking. Enjoy!

DC Scale: Suspension bill- Everyone loves this place.

Air Condition free since '03

I'm punishing myself for no good reason. I havent put my AC window unit in yet to see how long i can go. Thank god it has been a reatively mild summer. Its mid-July and i havent really been bothered. I have a fan and it works fine so far. I used to need absolutley freezing to sleep but now i just need a little fan. Next week it is supposed to be upper 90's all week. So that;ll be the real test.

DC Restaurant Review: Levante's

Its been awhile since I did a Restaurant Review. Work has had me wrapped up and I have been mainly eating at ol main stays like Cactus and Cafe Deluxe and 2 Amy's. Anyway here is a new review.

Levante's is an upscale kebob shop. I dont really know if you can have upscale kebobs but this place tries. Dinner consisted of Baba Ghanoujah, Kofte and my friend had a steak sandwhich on flat bread with creamy tomato soup.

Coming in from the early evening mugginess my friend and I were looking forward to a cool (AC blasting) restaurant. Unfortunately we were greeted by a Saharian Desert heat because the restaurants AC was on the fritz. So it looks like we were not only going to have Middle Eastern food but experience the heat of the region as well. On a seperate note geez WWIII looks like it is going to bust out soon. I wish we can have one day of stability. Levante's wasnt crowded for a Bethesda night which is good. We sat next to a mother and daughter, i think, and the daugter droned on about favoring solitude and not liking people. It seemed like she was trying to piss off her mom. They had the Levante's appetizer sampler which looks good. But do you want to eat with a person who doesnt like people??

Overall the food here is consistant. I've had many a kebob and the meats always come out moist and the rice and onions are always tasty. Also the starter bread is fresh and yummy. So the Baba Ghanoujah comes out first and it is creamy and garlicky always good things in my opinion. But was it exquisite, not really good yes but not exceptional. My Kofte was good seasoned appropriately and moist. But is the Kofte any different from a kebob shack's, well no, but the prices is seven dollars more.

My friends food looked good but I never asked him what he thought. So i will make it up or guess. it looked uninspiring.

I guess overall Levante's food is good but uninspired and for craps sake save your money and go to Moby Dick's Kebob atleast there you'll get the same meal for half the price and get grilled tomatoes. The hostess is hot at Levante's and the fresh bread is yummy...Its just uninspired.

My DC Scale: Out of committee but no real rush to get it to the floor for a vote.

Work is Hell

Today I noticed the staff was beaten up. I mean they had a look in their eyes like they were getting smacked around. I hate seeing that. I'm not sure what it is. We have good days and bad days. I have days when i feel like my soul has been sucked from my body but it never lasts. The look in the office is of a persons who have spent one month hiking without food. Starved and edgy but a determinition to finish the Appalachain Trail. I like to remind myself that work is hell and thats why they call it work. But i try to make it fun in the office and i guess i'm not succeeding. I know i am a bit of a workaholic and the hours and stress dont get to me..who am i kidding im smoking again and last sunday i was so drained i crashed all day. Work is Hell.

Coke Zero Better then New Coke

I love Coke. It is one of my favorite things ever. I know it is bad for me to drink too many but man is it good. So Coke has brought out Coke Zero and i usually think lesser cokes diet, caffiene free etc is for weak people. This Coke Zero is not bad and was a pleasant surprise. So if yo ar ehooked and need to cut back try Coke Zero its just like real Coke.

World Poker Tour

I finally had a poker win streak. I was pulling some amazing cars at the rivers turing two pairs into fulls. I usually lose big in this dumb games but last night i came out victorious. Im thinking baout leaving the Hill rat race to win on the worl dpoker tour.

Crabcakes in DC

I was just reading an article about crab cakes in DC what a joke! Do these jokester know what they are talking about? I mean why would you mix jumbo lumb with anything but a little love to hold it together broil it and serve it with fries. This haute crab cake idea is not worth persuing and is an insult to all crab areas especially the Chesapeake region. Stop the madness. There are not a lot of hot crabbers out there. I was just at cafe deluxe and they make a 5 out of ten crab cake. Go to Baltimore and learn from the masters. And until you do no one here can call it a "crab cake."

Parades

Who doesnt love a parade. This weekend we marched through some fun ones. There is nothing like sweating to death in the heat and humidity. Thankfully, we got mainly cheers and very little boos. I like all the big pretzels and all the cotton candy. I like all th epolitical signs. I like seeing the soldiers and getting the cool fly bys. They need to put more misters on the parade routes. I did cach some of the marchers talking on their cell phones that's wrong. I like seeing the kids. All the politicos were out in force, and I mean force and their crews were out. In my area we are very color oriented. I need tothin of better campaign gear? How about face plates for cell phones? Sunglasses with different colored lenses? Do rags? Maybe flip flops?

Vive La France

France rules! They trounced the Brasilains and bounced Portugal. Now its tough who do we cheer?!?!! I'm and England fan and they played flat with moments of brilliance so while sad not wiped out. Zidane is impressive at his age he should be inthe MLS living out his glory teaching us a thing or two. Totti or Zissou which to choose.
