What is in a Renaissance? Is it a transformation of societal artistic views, is it a natural growth of regional artist, is it finacial and social upward step for a community? DC is experiencing a slow renaiisance spurred by excessive unaffordable housing surrounded by neighborhood restaurants and cafes. Last night after feeding the bunny we went to Logan's Tavern across from the Whole Foods.
Logans Tavern is part of the fresh food restaurant group, Mekado, grill fish...fresh food done right. Logans Tavern is more like a slightly doen up neighborhood kitchen. The decor: DC sights on the walls, painted black, no table clothes, uptown bakery food, a long bar, hipster crown mixed with those trying to gentrify the area and push out affordable housing in favor of a yuppie downtown exsistence. It sickens me that we kill neighborhoods in favor of some bohemians organic, green friendly condo that mom and dad pay for...
The service was poor. Too many people too much of a crowd had the service running around like chickens with their heads chopped off. Unfriendly servers unless you were gay...it was not a friendly place. The wait was long and we waited at the bar, whe some spots opened we sat at the bar only to be asked to move so that people can drink. The hostess did a shit job of seating people. a group of six put in a booth for three because she could not figure out that the 6 top was moving soon. Putting a two into a both for four when tables for two were being seated for three people instead of waiting for people to finish. It was chaos.
Our server came over took our drinkorders and asked us if we knew what we wanted. When i said i needed a minute she said, "Oh yeah, we have some specials." Too late wench...I hate bad service...she brought out the bread and put down the blandest of olive oil, so balnd that we had to salt it to enhace the flavor.
The food: scallops grilled with chive aioli, spicy shrimp soup, house salads, steak with homemade steak sauce, filet of salmon, and a person eating a blondie sundae because they had eaten. The scallops were very well done, grilled so still moist and brushed with the olive oil to give it flavor but not to overwhelm the dish. It came with five for 8 bucks, a well wort starter. The shrimp soup was spicy...i dont now what it is but revcently spicy food has been sitting on my tongue and kicking the crap out of me..but the soup was spicy and hot with a good mix of veggies, chunks of potatoes and good fresh shrimp. It was a nice soup to eat. The steak wiht homemade sauce and fries, not as good as Les Halles, and the homemade sauce was A1 but it was still cooked well and the fries were crisp. Score a good steak. the salmon had the same effect, well cooked and meaty...overall the food is really good. The menu was more upscale bar then cafe mutiple wings, burgers, salads...i hope the rest of the menu is good.
Im torn, the food was good but the service was lousy..i guess this is a place to go during the week. weekends are a big no no.
