Belga Cafe

Last night a friends father was in town so it was a night out for CapitolSwell and Marshall Bobby at Belga Cafe.

Real Belgian food in DC, wow that awesome. Belgian and french food share many dishes and tastes mussels and steak frites are the most common. DC has many belgian/french cafes and I have tried most of them. I have a fondness for Les Halles as that was my first lobbyist lunch and he introduced me to the double fried frites. They used to have this roasted chicken that was so good...

Anyway for dinner last night, I had a onion tarte and steak frites last. I really should have had the garlic mussels instead. It was a tough menu that combined traditional with belgian fusion. The bread was crusty and doughy and the butter was unsalted and creamy a good way to start. The server was eager and the staff was attentive. So things were looking good.

My onion tarte was two round crisps and in between was sweet onions and tomatoes and it was topped with a green salad. It needed a salt to off set the sweet some cheese would have been nice. The flavor was nice and the layers of texture were a treat but it was just a bit off. My steak was over done and not seasoned at all. It didn't come pre-sliced with continuous heaping mounds of frites like at Le Relais de Venise. I wouldn't have minded my steak being over done if it was seasoned. I guess they restaurant thinks an herb butter is all you need. It did come with a healthy sized mixed green salad which was very welcomed. I need my greens.

For desert waffles and ice cream and a cappuccino. The waffles were perfectly sized and warmed. They were paired with Tahitian vanilla ice cream and came with a bitter sweet chocolate. It was a great desert and the cappuccino was expertly done.

Dinner wasnt bad. The food could have been much more.
