Failure of Leadership

Should elected officials lead or do what a majority of their constituents want? This is a question that I struggle with all the time. We get a few hundred calls and should that determine how you vote. If you represent 700,000 and 5,000 tell you to vote for something do you do that? That is 7/1000 of the population determining a course of action. I believe that you elect someone to do what is right. But too many times elected officials give up on their role of voting and just give into what is easiest, unfortunately that is often the loudest. If you dont have the balls to do what you think is right dont run for office.

I agree. Too often leadership is lacking in Congress tday. I'm reminded of a great dialogue in the movie American President:

Lewis says, "People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand."

The president replies, "Lewis, we've had presidents who were beloved, who couldn't find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference."
