Lladro Tale
My family went to Spain in 1992. At a very young age, when I traveled I lived by a simple rule, pack lite. That means one bag, that can be carried on. It is a simple philosophy that never serves me well. In 1992, I packed very lite some board shorts, a pair of khakis and some button downs for my trip to Spain. So one day we were in Valencia and we came across a lladro store. Lladro is fragile fancy figurines mainly ballerinas. My aunt bought the thai looking lladro, i remember laughing thinking to myself how will she get this home. My aunt is impulsive and thats what makes her so fun.
The rest of the week we saw a bull fight in Ondara, paced frenchie as they swam out to a high dive ocean platform while smoking cigarettes, i discovered garlic aioli, and we celebrated my dad's birthday. It was a great vacation.
On the last day we got to the Madrid airport, i had my green Patagonia MLC, while I didnt want to leave Spain I missed home. At the check in desk, i see my aunt packing a serrano ham into her bag. I thought to myself she's never going to make it thru customs. As I watched her scramble, i noticed her Thai dancy lladro was still not packed. I laughed again.
That is when I heard her say, "Walter, you dont have a carry on do you?"
"Tita, I have my patagonia bag." I eagerly reminded her.
"Good, you can hold the Lladro." She commanded.
"I cant my hands are tied. I have a carry-on." I stammered, holding my ground i thought i was in the clear. I was wrong, i found myself by a window holding this 20 inch lladro statue in my lap. 8 hours to JFK, 2 hours to BWI holding the thai looking lladro statue.
I see this Lladro and while i want to smash it, i know that action would still only hurt me and i would be reminded that my lladro transportation efforts would be in vain.

nice shot! very diverse. where is this? =D
Take it from me, it wouldn't be worth it. I went to NY one time with them, I think it was Freshman year in college at some point and Tita Mina had bought these pots. When they were finally dropping me off at my parents house I jumped out of the MPV and opened the back door to get my stuff and those poor pots fell out and smashed. She was not happy but I ran in the house pretty fast so I wasn't sure what happened after that. I'm sure they're somewhere in her yard along with the bunny with one ear. Gotta love her!
