Love is a Battlefield

Jilted Fiancee Helped Unravel DeLay's Team

A tight-knit group of aides helped Tom DeLay rise to the pinnacle of Capitol Hill and provided a link between their boss and Jack Abramoff. The unraveling of that group now feeds the ethics scandal surrounding Abramoff. (WSJ 03-30-06)

This snipet is a great lead into the WSJ article that goes on to tell the tale of how office romance turned sour because of a 23 year old waitress. This once great romance starts the end of the empire.

Budget Function 400 I think?

Damn what budget function do I need to use? Sometimes it is confusing especially when the agency you are looking at crosses four functions. Who wrote this budget?? Just reading the budget and checking out amendments, they want to just screw people. This is just mean spirited.

Life on the Hill as Reported by CQ

CQ TODAY – CONGRESSIONAL AFFAIRS
March 29, 2006 – 6:36 p.m.
Police Investigate Altercation Witnesses Say Involved McKinney
By Susan Ferrechio, CQ Staff

Capitol Police said they are investigating what happened Wednesday morning when, according to officers and congressional aides, Rep. Cynthia A. McKinney, D-Ga., struck an officer with a mobile telephone after she entered the Cannon House Office Building.

“The matter has been brought to our attention and it is under investigation,” said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

Officers said a male colleague at the building’s entrance did not recognize McKinney and asked her to stop and wait to be screened. Lawmakers are permitted to routinely bypass Capitol security checkpoints.

When approached, the congresswoman turned around and hit the officer, police said. One officer said police have a videotape of the incident.

A House leadership aide who talked with police was told that the officer at the door followed McKinney, asked her three times for identification, then touched her arm. McKinney turned and “made contact with his chest,” the aide said.

Neither the officers who described the incident nor aides could say whether McKinney was wearing the pin that identifies members of Congress.

McKinney and her aides did not respond to requests for comment.

McKinney is a 6th-term member who represents Georgia’s 4th District. She returned to the House last year after being ousted from her seat in a Democratic primary in 2002. Before her defeat, she provoked a national uproar by implying in a radio interview that the Bush administration may have known in advance about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Kimmie Rules!

I love dominating sports figures...I hope this win starts Kimmie's Domination. Congratulations on being Wolrd Champion Kimmie!

Thank God for Yanni's

Yanni's is a CP institution that has with stood the gentrification of CP. It is an old line restaurant emerging onto the neighborhood's exceptional foodies scene. Yanni's is good greek food at decent prices. What makes the experience exceptional is Yanni himself. Always present he makes you feel at home. Gyro pronoucened (Yi-ro) are awesome but the lamb roast is succulent. The restaurant runs the board on greek dishes. If you are in CP and wanta fun place to go without all the BS pretention go to Yanni's it doesnt disappoint,

Dream NCAA Championship

UCLA vs Mason

WHat is wrong with the top teams? Dont the realize the parity in basketball and why cant these guys just take someone out. I miss the UNLV and Fab 5, they played to crush people. Duke with Elton Brand reguarily scored a hundred points a game. I want some domination, with so much parity in basketball does an LSU or GMU win mean anything? It means they play like big teams or everyone in the top 30 is the same.

Anyway I'm [raying for a mason-UCLA final.

Maximum Legal Carry On Patagonia's Ultimate Bag

My Patagonia Maximum Legal Carry On is the ultimate travel pack. I have had one for 12 years. It has been all around this great big world for trips lasting a weekend to trips lasting a month. It can carry suits to surf trunks. The best is that it can convert into a pack with hidden straps. Not to mention that if you pack it right it does fit into all overhead compartments. So no more checked bags. I would recommend this bag to everyone.

Patagonia has a blackhole bag which is also a family favorite, but carrying so much gear can be problematic. they turned it into the freightliner and weathershed forthe wheeled enthusaist.

Patagonia makes good travel gear.

Jeans at Work Redux

A Senate Colleague wants to impose no jeans for her legislative staff and I think it is a great idea! No more jeans at work!

Netflix

I had to do it, i switched my Netflix plan from three at a time to one at a time unlimited. Its torture having three of those damn red envelopes mocking my every turn, looking at me and laughing, all the time muttering you are wasting your money. Damn that Oprah and her debt diet series!! So I made the switch now if I can get through my hundred queue life would be perfect.

NCAA

I hate basketball, I hate it when we lose and I hate watching crap teams. So LSU and UCLA are in..the question is who do I support? Looks like it"ll be UCLA.

DC's Worst: Food

I was reading a BrowserMetric's article on a crap restauarant so it got me thinking. What are some of the crap places in DC? Manny and Olga's carry out is bad. Ita open late and has cheap food both in cost and quality. The food makes you want to vommit. The worse part is that it has gotten better over the ten years and it is still shit. When you are drunk it goes down well but when you wake up it kills.

Presidents Club

I love free Wi-Fi it makes it easy to blog and to do crap. Im at IAH waiting for my flight to DCA. I went through Brooks Brothers (BB) when i got here and it was weird. I mean BB at the airport. It is actually a great idea. Fron now when traveling in the US for business i will just pack light and buy stuff at the airports BB when I land.

The TSA line at IAH moved a million times more smothly then at DCA. Plus the TSA employees were so much more friendly then at DCA. They have tough jobs but do it with a smile.

Wedding

This was the best wedding I have been to ina while. It was a good size, the food was awesome, and the ceremony was great.

Ceremony:
Dave and Erica had a circle of trust which was formed when all their family came up and formed the circle on the floor with petals. They started the ceremony in which the pastor talked about Dave and Erica. Nice comments some funny stuff. After that they asked family and friends to speak: Me, Bark, Jennifer, Garrett and someone else. Bark killed he ahd the best story about meeting Dave in 7th grade and how Dave taught him ot be himself and independent it was perfect. Dave sister came up and read a poem. After that Dave and Erica sang a duet. They fucking sang and it was beautiful. They did their committment vows and it was beautiful I was on the verge of tears. Then they did their rings. It was a short sweet and very touching. It was truly from the heart and didnt seem so cookie cutter.

Food
cheese a stilton with cranberry spread, which was great i would never have thought to put a stilton with a fruit topping. All sorts of veggies and fruit. Dinner was chicken marsala or a white wine salmon, potatoes, green beans, fettucine, mixed green salad and rolls. All yummy and very good not rubber at all and it actually tasted good. Finally their cake was a massive mud pie. They had coffe which was good it tasted like the Cafe Du Monde coffee.

Entertainment
The Blue Misery a local Houston Blues band. They rocked. It was amaazing. Their first dance was one where they actually looked like they were in love.

i think that was the deal they looked like they were in love and they were to busy being happy.

Honestly it was the way a wedding should be...

Downside to the weekend was well being the only one left of our friends who isnt married and they all have kids. Seriously they talked about kids the whole night it was surreal.

Congrats

You want me to speak??

I was asked to say something during the ceremony at my friends wedding. This is what i said:

There is nothing as special and as wonderful then to see two people come together in marriage. To be witness to a celebration like this is truly an honor. If everyone can take a moment and look around. This marriage is what bonds us together. It bonds us all together because it helps us to reaffirm our love for Erica and David, it helps us to reaffirm our love for our family and helps us to reaffirm our love for our friends.

It allows those of us who have not spent as much time together or who have lost touch to come together to apologize for not connecting and to reestablish a bond. These bonds last a lifetime.

You have brought together two sets of friends and family. The bond of your marriage has formed a new larger loving family unit. So no matter what happens in your lives there will always be people who love you and want to be there for you.

I got a lot of positive feedback. However, an older man from Baltimore came up to me and said. "You know many of us in our geenration thinks your generation doesn't understand anything and are reckless. But listening to you and David and his commitment vows were appreciated. It gives us hope" So i guess it was a compliment...

Pre-Wedding Fun

Its weird when all my friends fromhigh school get together. I have seen most of them about once a year since we graduated but we have never been all together since the second year of college. I know we all lead lives and have kids and families but it is great to see us all together. I'm supposed to say something at the wedding to day and dont have a clue. I'm goign to wing it and we'll see what comes out.

Anyway last night we were invited to dave's soon to be wife's dad's business for dinner. It is amazing to see a person build a business from his garage to selling and inventing new machines that are sold around the world. For dinner being in Houston we had Tex-Mex but not just any Tex-Mex, we had Ninfa's....Ninfa's crushes all Tex-Mex challangers. There was this owmen who is afraid of flying but wanted to come to the wedding. She took a bus from Takoma, WA to Houston, TX...thats dedication.

We went to the Alabama Ice House afterwards and it was just as I rememebr it form ten years ago.

Houston!

Houston is a great city. It literally has everything. Killer Tex-Mex I mean knock you on your arse goodness. Its friendly, very friendly. Houston has great buildings sky scrapers next to old west buildings. The roads scare me. Off ramps, or exchanges to other major highways are often on the left, when you get off on the highway you have to cut over four lanes of quick moving traffic. Besides that quirk, think AstroWorld and a Rothko Museum, think the Rodeo and world class ballet. It literally has everything.

A weird quirk of fate has pulled my friends to this city. Harris did Teach for America here at the same time that I was working for A Member from Houston. David came here for his PhD in rocks. PBDE4 family still has cattle ranches down around here. Weird..I rememebr one time when I was in town for work and Harris came to pick me up and we had identical clothes on down to the stupid golden fleece.

If oyu chance come to Houston, I hear there is a wealthy Chinese shipping magnet who live 30 miles north of Houston who has replicas of the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Terra Cota Warriors and all sorts of Chinese fun.

Its Been A Long Week

I have just started to pack and its not going well, I'm watching Wind and have no desire to get ready for my trip. Its been a long week for me and for the office. Todays marks the end of Appropriations week. Staffers walking around with manila envelopes humilated by appropriations staff and being forced to navigate oddly labeled bins, last minute changes and the feeling of relief for a job well done. The news and critcs call it pork but direct investment into my community is worthwhile. Yes I want to give a million dollars to a hard hit area to get more parental and community investment into their children. Yes I want to give money to keep my highways properly maintained and yes i want to give money so that our soldiers have access to the latest technology. My staff performed brillantly over the week and I want to applaud them. Sometimes people forget why we work and why we do this. I hope this experience and i hope these projects remind them that we can do worthwhile things even while in the minority.

Food Delivery

Chinese rules when it comes to food delivery. It trounces pizza and crappy thai. i do like some awfully bad cheesesteaks they are so yummy. The question is what competes with Chinese. Chinese true competition was Kosmo. I really miss Kosmo. Kosmo was the height of the dot.com world, some orange clad slacker delivering anything you wanted from the new iRiver Jukebox to the pack of smokes and maxim magazine. It was crazy back then.

But what is th ebest delivery. Crispy beef and rice is awesome. I could eat it every day. But what other meals come close, maybe some chicken tiki masala and some somosas, or some pad thai? I think the only thing that could match ever is BBQ, i dont care about what form, NC, Kansas city, Texas Brisket it just needs to be delivered to my door piping hot.

Why isn't there more food delivery diversity? What can we do to diversify and expand it

Houston Bound

I'm off to the Lone Star state for a wedding. It should be fun and mellow and it'll be great to see old friends. If I have time I'm going to St. John's Academy better known as Rushmore Academy. Rushmore was Bill Murray's best work. He got screwed by the Academy.

Wal-Mart

Stop bashing Wal-Mart, why is our liberal base going after these guys. They do so much for our country and for global trade that we should help them. If Americans want affordable goods then they should applaud Wal-Mart. We whine about healthcare but they give us jobs. Without jobs we have nothing. Without cheap goods we dont have a growing middle class. Without a growing middle class we dont have a great country.

West Wing: Josh and Donna

Josh and Donna should have there own show. Took them long enough. The story line should have been them hooking up in season two but do it all quiet like. They love each other, why can't love just conquer all.

Selection Sunday

Lets go Duke!

Lets go Duke!

March Madness is upon us and I cant wait. Its also recess so I can watch bball at work.

In the past the Hill would get all the CBS feeds so we could watch all the games. Now it is considered a perk. Just give me my games...I got CBS MMOD (March Madness on Demand) I hope this works well. I dont think the bandwith will support the viewership. it'll crash and just point out how weak our internet infrastructure is. CBS better be ready for the wrath if this doesnt work.

Teams to watch: BC because they can be scary and Bucknell. We dont get to see them but UCLA and Gonzaga are awesome.

Im excited to the Missouri Valley Schools I have heard so much about how great they are I hope they live up to the hype.

Finally my beloved ACC... Duke should make it to the Final Four, thats my honest actual assessment, they will struggle gainst GW but blow everyone else out.

Stay tuned for my upsets

Baltimore Restaurant Review: Pazo

The Migthty 'Canes destroyed the lame ass Hokies this year and it made my college football season. In a recent post I talked about teams that can dominate... I love them...I guess in Star Wars terms i'd side with the Empire. Miami has those dominating qualities. Not only did they win but I too won my bet with a friend who went to VT. My prize was dinner at Pazo.

Pazo is the current hot spot in Baltimore, too many hotties in there to pay attention to dinner. But scanning the room and hearing neighboring diners it was clear to me that many people are still uneasy with the concept and the scene. The place is lounge meets Moraccon warehouse. Too many guys not understanding what to do and where to hang out, sitting uncomfortable on a couch talking to their dates, people scanning the menu for anything mac and cheese realted. Tapas restaurants are heavily populated by gagles of chicks. This place will always be the girls night out starting point for Baltimore.

Do you want to know why i love tapas? I love tapas from Spain to Jaleo in DC and now in baltimore. there is nothing better then small dishes of great food. No longer do we have to be tied down by a main course of some hunk of meat. Now we can have a little garlic shrimp, some spanish torillas, and some spinach and roasted garlic. Tapas are great and portion control is awesome if you are dieting.

My cousin Angeli was at Pazo on what I like to describe as a date. She was way to polite, civil and giggley to be with just a friend.

The food: garlic ribs, mozzeralla and peppers, chips, calamari, empanadas, mushrooms, chorizo and potato and espresso ice cream. Tapas are great and comapred to DC sizes and prices this place kicked anything in DC in the arse.

The garlic ribs were slow cooked, but it wasnt that fake boiled and grilled. It was slow cooked with a nice garlic rub on it. The meat was tender and had a wonderful flavor. It was very simlar to the ribs my uncle makes and those ribs rock the casba.

The mozzeralla was mushy and the peppers were bland and the balsamic was non existant. Dont get this dish.

Chips, damn I love chips. freshly made potato chips are eveywhere and these were good, nicely fried and crunchy but still thick tasting. The aoili accompinanment was not so good, the only really good garlic dipping sauce is in Pego and a seafood joint in Denia. Jaleo and Pazo need to get that receipe and import it.

Calamari - What makes this good? I was told that if there are tenticles in your starter then it is fresh. What?? Anyway, it was yummy lightly battered and fried and not chewy.

Empanadas are massive! Light pastry and spicy meat together again this is a combination that rivals chocolate and peanut butter or bacon and eggs or milk and cookies. This is a must and get a couple of plates of these things.

Mushrooms sauted with salt and butter and garlic. This was simple and elegant they complimented the ribs nicely.

Chorizo and Potato for hobbits--The chorizo was yummy but it was sliced into tiny bits. This dish while tasty was so small in portion that i was shocked literally it was 9 thinly sliced pieces of chorizo and three sliced potato rounds.

espresso ice cream-- Desert are meant to be treats an di liked ot be wowed by desert. this tasted like starfbucks ice cream.

I always bitch about the coffee at restaurants and have decided that these fuckers cant make coffee. if you want good coffee go to Jays Coffee on York Rd or Murky in DC. Dont drink restaurant coffee after your meal and if you need a coffeee drink have a capuccino.

Overall this place was great, fun and people watching central. Go to this place, get dressed up in hipster wear for guys thats your dark jeans, button down or cool ironic t-shirt and a suit jacket. women thats your good glitter tank top and your snug jeans with the dangly belt and heals three inches.

Baltimore has always had food on par or better with DC but remarkable cheaper, Pazo is in that same vein great food, massive prices, and fun and hip.

oh in case you were wondering "massive" = excellent but better.

DC Restaurant Review: Palena

My first experience at Palena was years ago, when it first opened. Some of my mates and I went for a Holiday Dinner i dont remember what I had but I do rememeber having what can only be described as a culinary orgasm. I have been a handful of times after and each time I remember being wowed by the flavor and textures and combinations.

So at 7:00PM my protester, liberal, women's right of a cousin catches me in the office. Why I'm still there hanging out is beyond me. I love my job and everything about it but why was I there when votes ended three hours earlier and my boss was heading out to some events. Anyway, I hear one of our staffers say, "GiGI is on the F." "Yo," I answer. "I'm at Palena with Gio (My rambocous, smart, and sometimes Irish temepred nephew) I have had the longest day. I have a big booth want to join us." I'm not one to pass on a meal, and I'm definitely not going to pass on Palena. "I'll be there in 30." While the culinary delight awaits, I'm busy talking to my boss. He was at the WH today.

I speed up the parkway and park illegally and race to the restaurant. As I arrive I'm mauled by my nephew and sit down at the booth. i get a bottle of still and peruse the menu. The whole time I hear Gio yammering on about everything from his Girlfriend Cameron to why Lola Z yells at him so much. What to have!!? It's a dilemma Its been along week, a longer month, and one hell of along year. Can this one meal make up for all the stress and angst...it fucking better... and this place crushed it.

Gigi is cool, she worked to get some protections for mail order brides and it passed. She's getting married soon and we discussed wedding plans. Stay at the Peabody library. Palena has gourmet food, but in the bar area you can get killer burgers and hotdogs...this is next for my hot dog tour... I sat and watched Gio ignore his hot dog and eat "chicken wings." His mom, Gigi, tricked him the "chicken wings" were actually frog legs. But he ate them up and i got to share in the wealth.

So i get the three course meal: scallops and bacon with a strawberry foam, the lobster oyster Narine in a citrus cream sauce, and the muscovy duck. To use words would be an injustice but I will try. The scallops and bacon was perfect. The scallops were seared and firm and the bacon was not strips but a huge chunk of pork belly pan fried with a strawberry essence foam...it blew me away. My nephew wiggled around and he sang in spanish, he was singing in spanish what a nutty kid.

The second course was lobster and oytsers which I shared with my nephew. Heaven. The lobster was yummy altough Gio ate most of the big chunks and the oysters were delicious. The citrus cream sauce made me want to lick the plate clean.

GiGi's fiancee joined us. He's a good guy. Solid and they make each other happy.

Then came the duck. God made duck to make men weep and i did. Massive.

Anyway, words cannot describe the meal, i know i dont have the vocabulary to describe it but i also think there is no vocubalry in exsistence to describe it. if i could beam people the feelings and tastes that the meal evoked then you would understand.

This place is a must.

On my DC scale: The redline and pen are already framed and mounted on the wall.

The house is erie at night...its too quiet. Im in bed banging away on the keys but its scary quiet...

5:01AM

Sometimes I hear things, but I could have sworn I heard someone call out my name as I went to the bathroom. It really freaked me out and that was an hour ago and its 5:00AM. Was it a ghost? Was it door jams and this creeky old house playing games with me? Maybe it was a wandering roommate catching me as I had to pee. I'm up and cant sleep.

Rachel McAdams

The future of Hollywood!! Until I saw Red Eye...this is a movie for me to poop on...it sucked.

Le tour de hot dog de la globe

I have started a hot dog tour of the world...when I was younger my global hot dog tour started in Coppenhagen, a sausage in a baguette with some crazy Remoulade. It was tasty. However disaster struck and a Danish Bus driver uncermoniously forbade my eating the dog on the bus. While the experience was unfulfilling I had a glimpse into what the world of hot dogs could be like.

The idea for the global hot dog tour came on a family vacation as we flew from BWi to Coppenhagen I sat in an old jet with crazy smoking Europeans, the food service was decidedily continental and I was anxious to land. I was reading the inflight magazine looking for a clue as to what awaited us in the land of Vikings. As I read fun facts about Scandanavia I stumbled on facts about Iceland....it said, lamb hot dogs were the national food of Iceland...

...did I read that correctly??? As i kept reading, captured by this outlandish statement, it went onto explain that Bjork my cousins beloved has a favorite Hot dog stand in Reykavik(spelling is not important to me). This cant be right! Hot dogs are strictly American, could I have been this naive and stupid, well i guess the answer is yes...so from that moment forward..well let's say my brother and cousin also planted the seed in my head..damn them and their mind games...I found myself on the first step on a global trek to eat hot dogs from around the world.

That brings me to today...the Cannon House Office Building's bacon cheddar hot dog. I like to refer to it as the Cannon Dog or C-dog. Imagine a grilled hot dog, plump and nicely cooked with cheddar cheese and bacon, sounds good right?? Well it was tasty but it became a bowel bomb...never again will I have this stupid hot dog..why cant they make a nice icelandic hot dog with fried onions. So the c-dog is grease pure and simple, not worth the price and not worth the blast it gives the body.

so the tour continues, im searching for the perfect hot dog....

Oscars and the Hill

Read 2nd Seed's coverage of the Oscars. I still can't believe Crash won. How can you give the best Director award to Ang Lee and then turn around and give Best Movie to "Crash??" I'm glad that PSH won. Reese is awesome. E! Coverage is shallow and all the tools on the post show are soooo...bad, but I cant turn away.

So I watched the oscars and started falling asleep after best actress. But some very crazy hill things happened.

JS's performance was just the Daily Show Oscar Edition, the fake campaign ads were awesome. i thought he did an OK job in what has to be the worst job in Hollywood. Philosophical questions come up like is this what the world would be like if Hollywood and Politics came together. I'm not sure if it is a good mix. I liked Clooneys acceptance about how he is hapopy to be part of a community that pushes the envelope. i agree they do push but they also provide us with Date Movie and Ultraviolet (check out the blistering review from BrowserMetrics.) So you make the call!

Most importantly...

The Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Telecommunication Subcommittee Rep. Edward Markey was shown atleast twice during the awards show. Good ol' Ed Markey was chillin' with the stars. A Boston boy turned good Ed Markey is a champion of consumers and he was shown twice. I think we need to regulate the show and force it to be shown on all networks, lets stop them changing the networks each year and just let the E! crew do it. Just fucking joking the E! crew is awful. i hope Congressman Markey blogs his experience. Stop going to awards shows and drop those rates! We need real competition.

Unshit List- Updated

This is my view of the world and some of the coolest people, places, gadgets and ideas. So I'm ripping the idea from every mag and website in the world.

BBC Couplings because it is hilarious and the show provides so much insight and helps us to bridge the man-women communication gap. For example: "I want to spend the rest of my life with the woman at the end of that table there, but that does not stop me wanting to see several thousand more naked bottoms before I die, because that's what being a bloke is. When man invented fire, he didn't say, "Hey, let's cook." He said, "Great, now we can see naked bottoms in the dark." As soon as Caxton invented the printing press, we were using it to make pictures of, hey, naked bottoms! We have turned the Internet into an enormous international database of naked bottoms. So you see, the story of male achievement through the ages, feeble though it may have been, has been the story of our struggle to get a better look at your bottoms. ~Coupling, "Inferno," original airdate 2 June 2000, written by Steven Moffat, spoken by the character Steve

Apple PowerBook 15 Inch- There isnt much more to say. This machine rules.
