Bar/Restaurant Review: 18th Amendment

On Penn and 6th SE is 18th Amendment a bar with great pizza and Weezer's Blue Album. What a great mix. I took the office for some 'za and drinks.

First let's talk about drinks, Alton Brown has taught me some bar tips and I can make a mean martini but I don't really get the martini craze, appletinis, chocolate martnis so my office mates got some martinis at 10 bucks a pop. For Christ sakes, ten bucks is at least two drinks...Anyway...Drinks... They had some martinis and of course cosmos(yes I work with just women) and the martinis were ok, too much vermouth. The cousin was sweet but boring, I had bourbon. I love bourbon...Drinks were overpriced. In the DC scale it would be "Its been referred to committee."

The pizza was outstanding. Crisp crust, salty sauce, good cheese, fresh toppings. We got three and it feed six of us. Great pizza and I encourage you to go. On the DC scale "Pre-Conference"

Go its fun and good pizza but stick with drink specials.

Random Question

For Rob:

Could you have sex with a hot nun?

Lobbying Reform

We need to end free lunches. We need to end travel. Lobbyist are evil. Yes bring it all down. If buying a fucking steak buys a staffer I am a fucking garaffe.

This is bullshit.

Sorry, staffers and Members work there asses off. We get pissed on by constituents, we get endless grief all to make sure that you have roads to drive on, national security, and oh yeah that pork I got actually provided 34 new jobs and will make emergency care quicker and more effective. They want to stop staffers from lobbying when they come out. I'm sorry but if my $33,000 Legislative Assistant wants to lobby and double or triple their salary good on them. If they want to represent teachers and make their lives better good on them. We blame lobbyist its a teo way street. Congressman and staff need to remember that they have rules. They have to follow them. If we do anything then let there be trasparency but don't stop lunches and trips. Do you want a staffer educating a Member on a country if they have never been there? Its about educating and undertsanding an issue. Know the rules it is that simple.

Good Bye Leo

Leo McGarry is the CoS you want. Hes' the kind of CoS you want to work for. He smacks the principal around when needed. He smacks the staff around when needed. He protects and stands up for the staff. He knows everything and he leads. I cant stand people who talk about managing people. That's bullshit. You don't manage people.. you lead people. He was a leader follow his example and his lead. He made the show. CJ is good and I support women in leadership but she's no Leo. He had encyclopedic knowledge both policy and politics.

I know he was fake but John Spencer played that role perfectly. I heard he was asked to go against O'Reilly and the Fox nut jobbers all the time. While not a politician he would have whopped them.

Here's to John Spencer..a great actor and CoS.

Movie Review: Capote

This was a good movie and it deserves the acolades it has been receiving. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was outstanding. It left me thinking do I like Capote or was just in it for the glory of being the best writer in the world. Or the killer Perry was he just aguy who made one critical horrible mistake or is he evil. Hoffman was great in his role and he gave me great insight into the cultural icon of Truman Capote. I have to get his book. The constant struggle between glory and truth was amazing.

Why didnt anyone tell me that Capote and Harper Lee were friends?

In terms of my Hill scale...This movie is about to be sent from Conference Committee to the President for his signature.

Apple World Domination

Is apple going to take over? Im looking forward to the future tech wars. I cant wait for Google and Yahoo to go after the video and voice markets, i cant wait for the ultimate iPod that is my Tivo, music and gaming all in one portable media center. I have a psp and it is capable of doing everything and it's cool looking but it's such a process to get stuff on it and memory sticks sometimes makes me crazy. While everyone is going to come out with sick gear will it be as slick as Apple? Google is working on a multimedia box like the mac mini.

Restaurant Review: Mendocino Grill- Made it out of committee

It's restaurant week in DC. So it is a good time to try places. Currently a three course meal at lunch is $20.06 and for dinner $30.06. I had the pleasure of dining at Mendocino Grill with some friends. I thought it was good on my DC food scale I would say it made it out of committee and is waiting floor action.

Ambiance, modern and simple, good music I heard some dancehall, some alt country and some bob marley. It made me at easy. Our server was polite and attractive. It is a cozy restaurant and everyone can hear your dinner conversations. Overall the ambiance makes the experience inviting and warm.

In terms of food, I was with two friends for appetizer we had the pate and spinach salads. The pate was killer and it came with mixed greens, some chantrelle mushrooms, and a nice grainy mustard. The mushrooms were pickled and a little on the sweet side, the vinaigrette for the mixed greens was solid, the grainy mustard was ordinary, but the pate was good. I think its hard for people to get excited about ground liver with stuff in it, but one fellow diner was new to it and she loved it. I thought it was quiet good. If you go here this pate can be a meal within itself. The spinach salad was good, a little too much dressing but the bacon was good, smoky and not overdone. The starters were excellent overall.

For our main course two had steak and one had the chouctarie (sp sorry) plate, all sorts of good meat especially the duck. The main course were OK. The steak was decent it was a little rare for me but I fear cooking a organic steak might make it tough. The other person has a a good spread of meats. Overall the main courses were tasty but a little uninspired mediocre. I think it had to do with restaurant week. While I like the idea, concept and price of Restaurant Week, I think people get exposed to nice restaurants but it never allows people to really experience a restaurant and what they can do.

Deserts were on the same plane. Just kind of there, we had a chocolate pot de creme, a molten cake, and apple dumplings, all yummy but nothing outstanding.

Another drawback, was the coffee. Damn these restaurants make some good coffee. The last time I had a good cup in a restaurant was about three years ago for my birthday at Ruth's Chris. Since then it has all been burnt, strained through a dirty sock water.

I had a glass of wine with the meal called Coup d'etat, Alan Richman I think, it was good.

I did make the family mistake at the restaurant, I did not get the cheese plate. Damn it. Looking at the cheese menu, the had a Humbolt Fog and these Spanish cheeses paired with a pear chutney and I passed. I'm an idiot. Always get the cheese plate.

So go and try this place out. It is overall a fun, cool, cozy place and the food is tasty but don't go to be wowed.

I would go back again.

Cry me a river...

Why Me?
I got this from browser metric's website because for me it is spot on. I bought a new power book in August. I thought I had the coolest machine then stupid Steve Jobs and his, "One last thing.." Oh well its just something to dream about. My roommate actually has it worse then me. She got her powerbook on Saturday. She's rip shit.

Recess is like going through Rehab

I've been in DC for about a decade. I have worked on or with the Hill for about nine years. The hardest thing for a staffer, especially a staffer without a trip is recess. I have done my mail, returned every call, started new projects but the pace is too slow. I mean snails crawl. I mean if things do not pick up soon I might go nuts. The problem is that Hill jobs are hurry up and wait, then you add the element of a Member of Congress, trying to kick the crap out of the Republicans, trying to answer sometimes belligerant constituents, sometimes mollifying angry leadership staff, running to hearings, reading through pages of legislation before a vote in an hour, and writing memos on every issue in the newspaper to keep the staff and Member up to date. You add all of that and press calls and your day is a whirlwind of activity to which you get addicted. I think it is the action and power that is addicting. It's an adrenaline rush coupled with trying to do what's best with the country. Working on the Hill satisfy so many desires and dreams that it makes it hard when you are in recess. I guess this is why I can post so much crap.

Is Google the Future

Google has slowly bought up all the dark fiber in the US. They have bought energgy company technology to deliver telecommunication sevices to the the home. They have bought intrest in cable companies and are working on content. the have their own IM, voice service, email, and they have looked at buying a mobile company. They have also partnered with a Korean Company thats going to come out with super cheap laptops. The thinking is that they are going to offer a complete all-in one delivered to the home media center. We are talking broadband, voice, cable, games, music, news all in one. Google is the 800 pound gorilla in the room. They are going to scare the traditional old school telecom providers. Hopefully this will provide much needed competiton in the marketplace.

Speaking of competition..I ask this one question. Verizon is offering cable service in selected areas. Will they offer it to everybody. if you look at where they have gone so far they are only looking at wealthy areas. Verizon is going to offer cable to the rich and not the poor. Is that competition?? We do need to force more competition, I mean Congress hopefully with the rewrite we'll do it right this time.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Its going to happen one person at a time. My roommate got a Mac today, in fact my roommate bought a Mac with the same specs as mine. Its sweet. My roommate got an iPod Video and we are going to download some BsG, that last episode is awesome and I hope Adama gets it. He's a whimpy leader and we need someone who can march forward and crush the cylones. Where did that come from. Anyway we are going to get some BsG and the Office, the Booze Cruise and Christmas party episodes are hilarious. With our two machines and our inspiring screenwriter roommate we are also planning our first short. I belive we are thinking love story or a soldier going off to war. Maybe after that we can shot my Capitol Hill show. A Legislative Director thrust into the middle of an intelligence committee conspiracy, trying ot fix the world sometimes winning mostly losing because we are in the minority and Rachel McAdams is going to play his girlfriend. Im working on my screenwriter roommate, i think he is ripe for conversion. I can just dangle Studio Pro and Final Draft in front of him. We're going to change the world.

So on the HIl there are a few offices with Macs, Rep. Stark and Sen. Kennedy for sure and I believe Dave Weldon form Florida has Macs. They are so much easier to use I hope the Hill rolls over. I'm trying to get my office manager to buy in and she is being a stubborn mule. Anyway, justhave to keep pluggin away.

Joss Wheadon Universe

What we ned is Joss Wheadon taking over the X-men movie series. He and his writers rule. They do such strong character development. I just read the latest issue of Astonishing X-men and it was awesome. I think he can better explore the relationships and characters right now everyone in the X-men movies seem so one dimensional that it is getting boring. Joss take over.

Alright so I cant get over how awesome BtVS is. Its not my fault he did an amazing job. The characters had so much life and verve. Is it wrong to watch the whole series from start to finish. Think about it Xander went from slacker to no college to carpenter, to heading up a carpenter team to supervising whole construction sites. He kept growing throughout the series and they would refer back to earlier seasons and kept building on his characters development. Anya was a great character from vengenace demon to human to learning to be human to dying to save others the ultimate human sacrafice. It was truly great.

Angel was a great series and they stopped it when it was getting good. The last season the kill Cordelia and Fred, Cordy died saving Angel and Fred died just opening up a tomb from space. That's real writing.

Battlestar Galactica

This sci-fi channel show keeps getting better and better. I think there needs to be more in depth character development but the story lines and action are still very compelling. The effects are great and it is one of the few shows I keep on my TiVo. Apollo and Starbuck give me a little heartburn and I'm not sure why. if someone can pinpoint it for me that would be great. How many Cylones and bash ships are there? it would seem with such firepower superiority you could track Galactica and Pegasus and jump right next to them and blow them away. I hope they do an all out battle soon, massive space battle would be cool. I'm praying that we don't have a fifth coloumn among the Cylones or human sympathizers. If that happens the show would suck. It needs to maintain that constant strain of struggling against waves of cylones.

with how cool everything looks i think live action Macross is inorder. How cool would it be to see Roy Fokker kicking some Zentradi ass or a super hot Minmei??

Ice Luge

New Years Eve is usually a bust. Too much hype and what not. This year a smaller affair was made in order even though I had initial misgivings about the affair. We pulled together and presented a clean house and clean rooms, we had the champagne and beer and tatsy treats for our guests. We were good to go. Overall, I thought it went well although early on in the evening it seemed like it was going to be the just the house mates and Carson Daly. But we swelled the ranks of our party-goers and how do you ask but with our very own ice luge. Jager, Sauza, Absolute, Kahlua and by the end of the night champagne all made an appearance. Chilled tequilla brings back memories of the family at weddings. Unlike most ice luges which are just a big block of ice with a zig zag line, we had a sculpture of Rodin Proportions We had a sail boat crashing over some waves. Pictures are coming shortly. I think everyone in attendance did atleast one.

I forget how much I enjoy Jager! It tickles the tounge and makes one feel strong.

My housemates were in rare form, the self proclaimed lite weight looked like he was going down for the count only to drink through the hesitation. Another one spoke fluent spanish and was called an very unfortunate term for not doing a luge run while in fact he had done half a dozen or more already, and finally the youngest of the lot had trouble "containing" her fun. She did make friends with Red, a cheerful fellow who was there for her. While your's truly suffered through a humilitating defeat as i could not get a good game of pretend anchorman going with my bourbon. While waylayed i enjoyed some of coppolla's finest bubbles and had a mighty fine cigar.

A highlight of the evening was when our charming neighbors paid us a visit. Our neighbors are great they give us treats and are like parents. They came over and helped to ring in the new year. They even chanced it by doing an ice luge.

New years came and went and having a smaller affair and an ice luge is highly recommended.

My only questionis this...if I put my lips on this ice block as did all of our guests have i kissed all the people they kissed?? Creepy.
